Straight from Sci-fi: A Spray on Battery!

Here at Gold Coast Battery Central, all of our expert staff prides themselves on having their finger on the pulse when it comes to new battery technologies. Using these blogs as a medium, it is our goal to pass on some of this knowledge to our loyal readers, so that you too may begin to develop the same passion we have for all things batteries. In today’s blog post, we will be putting the spotlight on a new breakthrough scientists have made in regards to a spray-on battery. Seriously.

In the final days of June this year, scientists in the United States revealed the results of some of their groundbreaking studies to the public. The highlight of this was the news that they had developed the core technology which allows a battery to simply be sprayed on to any surface.

The way that this works is by applying 5 separate layers of materials to any object, in a specific order of course. The layers are all made up from the different elements that are required in order to make a battery function. – two current collectors, a cathode, an anode and a polymer separator in the middle.

These layers are able to be applied to a wide array of materials, including glass, stainless steel and even types of ceramics (like a coffee mug). Unfortunately, the technology is still a work in progress – in order to effectively operate in its current state, the battery must be in an environment that is completely free of oxygen.

While we are still a fair way off from seeing this technology in the shops, our team here at Battery Central feels that it is safe to say that it will make a huge impact on the way electronics work in the not too distant future. If you would like to check out any of our current battery range, please contact our Battery Central store in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast on 1300 008 299.
